About Tau Lambda

There was a desire to serve on the Rose-Hulman campus, and this desire saw its realization when the Tau Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Omega came into being (April 14, 1968). The activation ceremony was performed with the assistance of the brothers from the Beta Lambda chapter at Indiana State University.

The 1970s was a decade when everyone wanted to be and do what "they" wanted. It was not a time for service to others, but rather service to self. It was in this atmosphere that the Tau Lambda chapter faded out of existence sometime after the Spring of 1977 Activation.

In 1979, Charles "Elf" Wilson came to Rose with the expectation of joining Alpha Phi Omega which he'd read about in the Boy Scout and Order of the Arrow manuals. He was very disappointed when he discovered that the school's chapter had been inactive since the mid 1970s. Having been in Scouting for seven years, he saw the good that could be accomplished by organizations dedicated to the service of others. In his research about the chapter as it had been, he discovered that the administration was positively inclined toward the restarting of the chapter. With their support and the help of Dr. Terry Ishihara (a former advisor), he contacted national headquarters and sent for pledging materials. He then sent out a letter to prospective chapter members (all of whom had a background in Scouting). These individuals made up the core of the restarted chapter. It was by no means a one man job. It took a lot of time and dedication on everyone's part. He re-established the Lost and Found as one of the chapter's most visible ongoing service projects to the campus.
